Aside from water, tea made from the leaves of the plant Camellia sinensis is the most widely consumed beverage in the world. Green tea is rich in specific polyphenolic compounds known as catechins—specifically epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)—which are responsible for many of the therapeutic and preventive actions of this remarkable plant.
