Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is a tall
plant with sharp, spiny leaves and purple flowers. The extract
is made from the fruit (the ripe seeds) of the plant and has
been used as a remedy for liver conditions for over 2,000 years,
and has also been used for disorders of the gallbladder, spleen,
and kidney. Milk thistle contains antioxidants, including silymarin
(a flavonoid complex), that protect the liver against damage
from free radicals.
Silymarin
prevents dangerous substances from entering liver cells. It
also stimulates the liver to replace damaged cells with healthy
new cells. Recent studies have shown that silymarin has the
ability to block fibrosis, a process that contributes to the
eventual development of cirrhosis in people with inflammatory
liver conditions. Research has also shown milk thistle extract
to be effective in patients with cirrhosis of the liver and
chronic hepatitis. Milk thistle extract is most commonly recommended
to counteract the harmful actions of alcohol, drugs, and other
chemicals that poison the liver. Protect the liver—most
metabolic processes, especially detoxification, rely on this
organ.
