The French Paradox has been attributed to the high consumption of red wine and grapes—foods that contain ample quantities of health-promoting compounds called polyohenols. Polyphenolic procyanidin occur as single units (monomers) an oligomers (such as dimers and trimers). They are responsible for most of the significant health effects of grapes and grape seed. These polyphenols have a long history of medicinal use, and modern research has pointed out the enormous antioxidant potential of grape seed extract in particular. The antioxidant activities were found to be much stronger than vitamin C or vitamin E in aqueous systems. Other benefits attributed to grape seed include prevention of atherosclerosis, reduction of cholesterol, and delayed onset of cataracts. New research examining the chemoprotective effects if grape seed is also promising. Gravinol-S™ grape seed extract offered by OptiPure® is prepared from specifically selected grape seeds and processed using natural grain alcohol. It provides a considerable value to marketers who want the maximum amount of active compounds for their products, because it contains a minimum of 95% flavonol content, of which 82% are oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs), 12% being the highly active monomeric OPCs.
