Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is essential to the
production of energy by every cell in the body. A beating heart
needs a continuous source of energy; therefore a great deal
of research has been conducted on the heart and CoQ10. Clinical
studies have shown that administration of CoQ10 has improved
heart health in those with impaired cardiovascular function.
In addition to its role in the production of energy and heart
health, CoQ10 is a potent antioxidant nutrient. Many common
drugs prescribed today have serious clinical side effects, including
the interference with the pathway that synthesizes CoQ10.
Research
proves the need for supplemental coenzyme Q10 with prescription
drug therapy, particularly HMG-CoA inhibitors, commonly known
as statin drugs. Statins are frequently prescribed to control
elevated plasma cholesterol levels. Since cholesterol and CoQ10
share the same biosynthetic pathway, statin therapy depletes
the body of CoQ10, Studies have shown low plasma levels of CoQ10
in patients taking these cholesterol- lowering drugs. Statins
are prescribed to approximately 40-50 million patients in the
United States alone. However, adjunctive use of CoQ10 has been
shown to curtail the depletion of CoQ10 associated with chronic
use of these statin drugs.
