Alpha lipoic Acid (ALA), also known as thioctic acid, is a versatile antioxidant. It is unique in that it is universally soluble, having both water- and fat-soluble properties, offering antioxidant protection against free radicals inside and outside the body’s cells. ALA can also regenerate other antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and gluthathione, thus prolonging their existence in the body. This protection may allow antioxidants to retain more of their power and may give the body more sustained nutritional defense. Alpha lipoic acid is readily absorbed when taken orally. Once inside the cell, it is reduced to dihydrolipoic acid, which is another potent antioxidant. Research studies have shown supplementation with alpha lipoic acid to be useful in the treatment of cellular oxidative stress and supporting healthy blood glucose levels. ALA helps promote blood sugar maintenance by enhancing the uptake if glucose in skeletal muscle tissue. Furthermore, some cases showed a significant reduction in complications associated with diabetes, including the development of cataracts, kidney failure, heart disease, and nerve damage. Alpha lipoic acid also plays a critical role in energy production and metabolism.
